Remove Background

Remove backgrounds from portraits and selfies in your browser with MediaPipe. Download a transparent PNG—free, no login, nothing uploaded.

Does this work on products, logos, or pets?

This tool uses Google's MediaPipe selfie segmenter, trained for people and portraits. It works best on headshots, selfies, and full-body photos of humans. Product packshots, logos, animals, and scenery often get rough edges or missing regions. For those subjects, use a general-purpose cloud remover or a design app with manual refinement.

Why does the first run take longer?

On first use, your browser downloads WebAssembly runtime files and the selfie segmentation model (a few megabytes) from CDN endpoints. They are cached for later visits, so subsequent removals start faster. Your photo is never sent to our servers during this download—the model runs entirely on your device.

What file format do I get?

The output is always PNG with an alpha channel so transparent areas show correctly in design tools, slide decks, and websites. JPEG cannot store transparency, which is why PNG is the default. File size depends on original dimensions; run Image Compressor afterward if you need a smaller payload for the web.

How good are hair and fine edges?

MediaPipe produces solid results on typical selfies and studio portraits with clear subject separation. Busy backgrounds, motion blur, or overlapping objects can leave halos or clipped hair strands. Zoom the checkerboard preview before downloading. For marketing hero shots, you may still want manual touch-up in Photoshop or Figma.

Is my photo uploaded to a server?

No. Segmentation runs in your browser via WebAssembly. We do not receive, store, or analyze your images. Only the open-source model weights are fetched from public CDNs (jsDelivr and Google storage), similar to loading a JavaScript library.

Is there a file size limit?

Images up to 15 MB are accepted to keep memory usage predictable on laptops and phones. Very large camera RAW exports should be resized with Image Resizer first. If processing fails, try a smaller JPEG or PNG and run again.

Is this tool free?

Yes. Free with no login, watermarks, or daily cutout limits. The underlying MediaPipe library is Apache-2.0 licensed.
