Package Dim Weight Calculator

Calculate volumetric (dimensional) weight for cross-border shipping from carton L×W×H and actual weight. Presets for common carrier divisors—5000 and 6000 (cm/kg) plus UPS US 139 (in/lb). Shows volume, dim weight, and billable weight max(actual, dim)—free in your browser, no login.

What is dimensional (volumetric) weight?

Carriers charge by billable weight—the greater of actual scale weight and dimensional weight derived from package size. Light but bulky cartons (pillows, empty boxes with filler) occupy aircraft and truck cube, so couriers apply a volume-based weight to recover space cost. Dimensional weight is not a physical measurement; it is a pricing proxy computed from length × width × height divided by a carrier-specific divisor.

How is dimensional weight calculated?

Volume = L × W × H in the preset's dimension unit (cm or inches). Dimensional weight = volume ÷ divisor. Billable weight = max(actual weight, dimensional weight). With the 5000 preset (cm/kg): a 40×30×20 cm carton has volume 24,000 cm³ and dim weight 4.8 kg. If actual weight is 2 kg, billable is 4.8 kg. If actual is 6 kg, billable stays 6 kg.

When should I use divisor 5000 vs 6000?

Both presets use centimeters and kilograms but different divisors. Divisor 5000 is common for express and air freight from Asia–Europe lanes and many DHL/FedEx international tables. Divisor 6000 appears on some economy or ground tariffs and regional carriers. Always confirm the divisor on your live rate card or contract—this tool provides quick estimates, not a binding quote.

What does the UPS US 139 preset mean?

UPS domestic US dimensional weight uses inches and pounds with divisor 139: dim weight (lb) = (L × W × H in³) ÷ 139. Example: 12×10×8 in = 960 in³ → about 6.91 lb dim weight. Select this preset when comparing US domestic UPS bills. International UPS and other carriers may use cm/kg divisors instead—switch presets accordingly.

How should I measure L, W, and H for shipping?

Measure the outermost points of the packed carton including padding and outer carton walls—carriers often scan the largest rectangular prism that contains the shipment. Round up to the carrier's rounding rule if published (many round each dimension up to the next whole centimeter or inch). Do not use inner product dimensions alone if bulging fill increases the outer size.

Can I calculate multi-carton shipments here?

This calculator handles one package at a time. For multiple cartons, compute each line separately, then sum billable weights only if your carrier rates per piece that way—some contracts use shipment-level aggregation or highest single piece. Check your tariff before summing results from this tool.

Do I need to convert cm to inches first?

No—pick the preset that matches your carrier's published unit system. The 5000 and 6000 presets expect cm and kg; the UPS 139 preset expects inches and pounds. If you only have mixed units, convert dimensions first with Unit Converter on Power Tools, then enter consistent numbers here.

Is package data uploaded?

No. Length, width, height, and weight values are processed entirely in your browser. Nothing is sent to Power Tools servers—safe for unreleased SKU dimensions or supplier quotes.

Is this dim weight calculator free?

Yes. Free with no login. Use it for FBA prep checks, Shopify fulfillment quotes, and 3PL rate comparisons before booking labels.
