Social Character Counter

Free social character counter—paste once and compare grapheme length against approximate Twitter/X, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, LinkedIn, and Threads limits. Unicode-aware counting runs locally in your browser with no login.

What is a social character counter?

A social character counter measures how long your draft is against each network's posting limits in one view. Instead of opening six native composers, paste your caption, tweet, title, or bio here and see remaining characters per platform. This tool uses grapheme-aware counting so emoji and many accented letters count as users expect on modern apps.

Are the platform limits exact?

Limits shown here are approximate public guidelines—Twitter/X posts near 280 characters, Instagram captions near 2,200, TikTok captions near 4,000, YouTube titles near 100, and so on. Networks change rules, count URLs differently, or reserve space for mentions and media. Treat this social character counter as a drafting aid, then verify inside each app before publishing.

How does grapheme counting differ from JavaScript string length?

Plain .length in code can mis-count emoji and some combined Unicode marks. This tool spreads text into Unicode code points with the spread operator so a single visible emoji typically counts as one character, closer to how users perceive length. Complex emoji sequences may still differ slightly from a platform's internal counter—always re-check in the native composer for high-stakes posts.

Does this social character counter support Twitter / X?

Yes. The Twitter / X post row targets roughly 280 characters for standard text posts. Premium tiers or long-form posts may allow more in the native app; this row reflects the classic short-post limit marketers still optimize for in threads and replies.

Can I check Instagram caption and bio length together?

Paste your caption to compare against the Instagram caption row (~2,200 characters). For bio copy, paste only the bio text and read the Instagram bio row (~150 characters). Mixing caption and bio in one paste will skew both rows—count each field independently for accurate remaining characters.

How do I use the YouTube title and description rows?

YouTube enforces different limits on titles versus descriptions. Paste only your title to watch the ~100-character row; paste your full description block separately for the ~5,000-character row. Front-load keywords in the title row because truncation in search and mobile feeds happens early.

Is my post text uploaded when I use this tool?

No. Counting runs entirely in your browser. Campaign drafts, unreleased product copy, and client captions never leave your device—useful when cloud word counters are blocked by policy.

Should I use live mode or the Check button?

Click Check limits after a paste to refresh all platform rows once. Enable live mode to update counts as you edit—helpful when trimming a tweet character by character. Both modes use the same grapheme counter underneath.
